In Malaysia, a barista is often thought of as nothing more than a pembancuh kopi – literally a coffee maker. A low-skill, low-wage job that requires nothing more than taking orders and pushing some buttons – occasionally maybe you’ll need to draw a pretty picture in milk. Working as a barista is something you do after college or just a part time job you take up while you figure out what you really want to do with your life.

We want to change this perception and raise the bar for local baristas with a monthly contest. To not only showcase Malaysia’s barista talent, but also a space for them to make new friends, learn new skills, and hone their art. Caffeine isn’t a drug, it’s a vitamin. And a barista is more than just an unskilled coffee slinger – we’re doctors of coffee!

Each month’s winner will qualify to the GRAND FINALS with MYR10,000 up for grabs!

RULES

  • Open to all Malaysians or permanent residents aged 18 or older
  • 8 contestants per month

 

Format: Single-elimination contest (knockout rounds)       

  • 8 contestants match up in 4 heats in the first round. The winner of each match-up proceeds to the next round while the loser is eliminated from the contest. (Try again next month!)
  • Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the monthly champion.
  • There will be 3 guest judges and 1 head of barista. You have 5 mins prep time + 10 mins brewing time.                    

 

You will be judged and awarded:                     

  • Maximum of 45 pts for 3 espresso shots based on aroma, flavour, and body.
  • Maximum of 30 pts for 3 latte arts based on contrast, definition, creativity, aesthetic and speed.
  • Additional 25 pts for consistency of grind, distribution, tamp pressure, extraction, temperature of milk, and consistency of milk froth.
